2015 Porsche Macan S Diesel

2015 Porsche Macan S Diesel

Hot on the heels of the Macan S and Macan Turbo debut in the spring of 2014, Porsche has announced that a diesel-powered version of this compact crossover luxury vehicle will be available in the U.S. next year. In Arizona, the 2015 Macan S Diesel will be available at Porsche of Tucson.

Andre Oosthuizen, V.P. of Marketing for Porsche North America, confirmed in early October, 2014, that the company was working on engineering and development of a V-6 diesel Macan S. Oosthuizen estimated the new model would field approximately 245 hp. He further elaborated that the price point for the diesel-power Macan will likely fall between that of the Macan S and Macan Turbo, likely at or just below the $60,000 mark.

Porsche currently sells a diesel-fueled 3.0 litre turbocharged V-6 model in Europe and other overseas markets. The automaker also sells a four-cylinder Macan (standard fuel) model overseas, but currently has no plans to offer that configuration in the U.S. based on Porsche’s limited production capacity for this model.

The Macan S is powered by a 3.0 litre twin turbo V6, boasting a whopping 340 horsepower. It does 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and tracks at 156 mph. Although these sound like true sports car stats, the Macan S is a true compact crossover, sportier and smaller in stature than its midsize sibling, the Cayenne. While the Cayenne features an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission, the Macan offers the ultra-responsive 7-speed dual clutch PDK gearbox. The sporty motif continues inside, with a CDR-plus standard audio system and a 7” color touchscreen control panel.

The Macan Turbo comes on strong visually from the front, with a beefy nose accented by large, bladed air intakes, Bi-Xenon headlights and cornering lights. Sport design side skirts carry the strong profile around, with turn signals and position lights integrated such that they appear to hover inside the side air intakes. The Turbo model has 3.6 litres with 400 hp, and moves 0-60 in only 4.6 seconds. Track speed is 164, a record for this market segment.

Expect the diesel-powered Macan to continue this legacy of sport, luxury, performance and comfort. Industry experts expect this model to feature a 3.0 litre V6 diesel engine, providing a similar level of power to the Macan S, with an estimate 24 mpg city and 31 mpg on the highway. The overseas markets have plenty good to say about the Macan S Diesel. A “CarsGuide” review of the Australian release offered this high praise: “A quiet riot with the diesel and a useful all-wheel drive set-up, as well as black magic ride quality, this is one of the best on-road SUVs you can get.”

Watch for the diesel 2015 Porsche Macan S to possibly debut at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, November 21-30. The LA Auto Show website is currently listing a “Porsche TBA” on its “Debuts” page. Meanwhile, check out the most recent Macan S and Macan Turbo models at Porsche of Tucson.
