Drive the Porsche Macan: The Brand’s Very First Compact Crossover

On the market for the first time is the 2015 Macan, is Porsche’s first compact crossover. The Macan is more sports car than SUV, but with the Porsche DNA you wouldn’t expect anything less. The new Porsche Macan can be described as a luxury super-hatchback SUV with AWD. If you want to drive a 911 disguised as a compact SUV then the Macan is the vehicle for you at Porsche of Tucson.

Porsche Style VP Michael Mauer describes the 2015 Macan not as the Cayenne’s baby brother, but as a big brother to the 911. Some describe it as 80% 911, 20% Cayenne and 100% Porsche.

The Porsche Macan is more sports car than utility vehicle thanks to the 340 horsepower S model and the 400 horsepower Turbo. Twin-turbocharged V6 engines with 7-speed PDK double-clutch automatic transmission power both.

The 3.0-liter 340 hp Macan S delivers 339 lb-ft of torque and has a fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The powerhouse 3.6-liter 400 hp Macan Turbo belts out 406 lb-ft of torque. It will do 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 165 mph. Fuel efficiency on the Turbo model is the same as the Macan S.

The PDk’s sport mode button adds more snap to the gearshifts and puts some extra growl in the exhaust sound. The AWD on the Macan is electronically controlled. When you add 19″ wheels, the new Macan naturally adapts to the track even though it weighs over 4,000 lbs. The Porsche Active Suspension Management system (PASM) is optional on the Macan S and standard on the Turbo, providing even sharper handling. This is done by tightening up the suspension and the already responsive electric steering. Not many cars or even other SUVs can easily make a high-speed corner with so much confidence. The Macan is luxury car that is quiet on the road and has a towing capacity up to 5,291 lbs. The “off road” button mounted on the center console alters the gearshift points, AWD torque distribution and throttle response for perfect traction in off-road conditions.

The interior of the Macan caters to luxury from the black trims and the suede-like Alcantara seats of the base S model, to the Turbo’s leather and brushed aluminium look. The front seats wrap you in luxury, while the big gauges display all the important data. The multifunctional steering wheel has a sport car feel to it. The Macan has excellent visibility out the windshields and towards the rear. Back seat legroom is on the cramped side. With the second row of seats folded down, there is 53 ft3 of cargo space in the back. With the seat up, cargo space is reduced to only 17.7 ft3. There are many positive features of the new Porsche Macan however when it comes to interior room, it is modest compared to other vehicles of it’s class.
