Introducing the Porsche 918 Spyder. The Hybrid Supercar of Tomorrow.

The Porsche 918 Spyder first debuted at the 80th Geneva Motor Show in 2010. It has amazed ever since for its ability to be a top-tier hybrid super car that few, if any, can compete with. The hybrid “hypercar” is replacing the supercars of old in that it is one of the first plug-in top-tier racers. Although top speeds require use of the gas powered V-8, the 918 Spyder is faster than most street cars using only it’s twin electric engines. The Spyder is now out of its 3-4 year test phase and is now for sale in the Porsche inventory of some local dealers.

The Porsche 918 Spyder’s gas engine is a hyper-powerful 4.6 liter, 608 horsepower V-8 outfitted for hybrid technology. The wires that connect the V-8 to it’s two electric motors make it look like something designed by the people who made Robocop. With the added power of the electric engines, the 918 Spyder set for production will reportedly max out at 887 horsepower with 940 lb-ft of torque. The car is reported to have a top speed of 211mph. The exhaust is made with an advanced nickel alloy called Inconel that is lighter and stronger than the best titanium racing exhausts. Also, the 918 will have a top-of-the-line seven-speed PDK transmission. According to Porsche, The Weissach model 918 Spyder can go from 0 to 62 mph in 2.6 seconds. The 918 is a true hybrid and can run completely on electricity. When running on its electric engines, it can go from 0 to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds while using no gas and producing no emissions.

The only stat that needs to be talked about to get the point across of how great the 918 is, involves the world record it set at the hallowed Nurburgring racetrack in Germany. The 918 Spyder is the only car to have ever run a full lap in under seven minutes at the famous German track. This feat was done with the help of hybrid technology. That lap was the first of many for the new generation of hypercars powered by hybrid technology. For more information about the 918 or other models visit your Porsche of Tucson dealer.
