Porsche Panamera gets a Refresh

Still the Sportiest Sedan on the Market

When Porsche introduced the Panamera in 2009, young executives who had to get rid of their 911 to make room for a couple of children rejoiced. The Panamera was a sweet compromise between the small two-seater of their youth and the SUVs that signaled childhood was indeed over. Not one to mess with a good thing, Porsche gave the four-door sedan a refresh this year, with most of the work happening under the hood and in the suspension. Only those obsessed with the Porsche Panamera would notice the slight tweaks to the body.

More Horsepower Delivers Quicker Times

Both the naturally aspirated six-cylinder and V-8 engines get an extra 10 horsepower, while the turbocharged eight-cylinder adds an additional 20 horses. The S model gets an entirely new aluminum V-6 with twin turbo chargers that pumps out 420 horsepower, or 20 more than the V-8 it replaced. This engine also delivers decent fuel mileage considering the performance, scoring 17 miles per gallon in the city and 27 out on the open road. The new horsepower drops the Panamera’s 0-60 mile per hour time to 4.9, fast enough to make you forget about the extra two doors.

Handling Remains State-of-the-Art

The new Porsche Panamera features larger dampers and control arms in all of the three available suspension packages. Choose from steel springs with adjustable damping, steel springs with fixed damping or air suspension depending on the driving experience you’re trying to achieve. All three options deliver precise handling through corners, although the air suspension provides a softer ride. Put the Panamera through its paces on a mountain course and you’ll be amazed at the lack of body roll in a two-ton vehicle.

Interior Says Welcome to the Club

When you pay well north of $75,000 for a vehicle, you expect a certain level of comfort. The Panamera delivers both comfort and technology in spades. With power bucket seats in the front and rear, driver and passengers are swathed in luxury reminiscent of a country club smoking parlor. The only thing missing are the brandy snifters and cigars. A space-age instrument cluster provides vital vehicle information. Porsche’s standard infotainment system delivers symphonic sound along with real-time navigation updates.
