The 2015 Porsche Spyder has brought home yet another important award. The prestigious Robb Report has named the Porsche 918 Spyder its “Car of the Year.” Although the formal announcement won’t come until the magazine’s March issue hits newsstands later this month, the surprise announcement came first at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in January. In Arizona, the home of the 918 Spyder is Porsche of Tucson.

The Robb Report is the premier luxury lifestyle magazine, covering jewelry, real estate, fine automobiles and other collectibles for its highly affluent readership. Available in both traditional print and online additions, the Robb Report has been awarding its Car of the Year for 22 years. In November of last year, the magazine brought together 140 VIPs, editors and readers and asked them to evaluate 13 of the world’s most elite luxury vehicles.

Among the competition was the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, the Audi RS 7, the Bentley Continental GT V8 S, the BMW i8, Ferrari California T, the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, Lamborghini Huracan, Maserati Ghibli S Q4, the Mercedes-Benz S550 Coupe Edition 1 and the Rolls Royce Wraith. Tough competition any way you look at it!

The Porsche 918 Spyder uses three engines to generate 887 hp at 8,500 rpm with 944 ft lbs of torque in 7th gear. Going from zero to 60 in a 2.5 second blink of an eye, it tops out at 214 mph. The fasted production car in the Porsche stable of models, it’s also the priciest, with a $845,000 base price. The car as viewed by the Robb Report judges was priced somewhere north of $1.2 million.

This year’s judging was held in Napa Valley at the Meadowood Resort. Judges actually ranked all 13 contenders in order of preference; however, the final order won’t be known until the print edition arrives. The Ferrari Berlinetta F12 took home the honor in 2014. Previous years’ winners include the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Bentley Continental Supersport, This wasn’t Porsche’s first year to shine at Robb Report, as the Porsche 911 Carrera S won in 2013 and, ironically, it was the Porsche 918 Spyder that took home the inaugural award in 1994.

In Arizona, you can see all of the award-winning models, including the venerable Porsche 918 Spyder, at Porsche of Tucson.
