Seven Generations Later, 911 Still Going Strong

The love affair with the Porsche 911 began in 1963 when the prototype was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in preparation for its release in 1964. Now 53 years and seven iterations later, the 911 still holds the mantle as the preferred premium sports car for people who enjoy driving. The initial model came with an air-cooled six cylinder engine that produced 130 horsepower and a top speed around 130 miles per hour. The new 911 GT3 also comes with a six cylinder engine, but it generates 500 horsepower and makes the run from 0 to 60 in a blistering 3.2 seconds on its way to a top track speed of near 200 mph. Porsche 911 Through the Years

1973 brought the first major iteration of the 911, producing a version that was longer than any other. Known as the “G” model, this 911 had large bumpers designed to meet U.S. crash standards. Three-point safety belts and large headrests added to the safety of the driver and passenger. The “G” version also brought the inception of the 911 Turbo in 1974. Performance increased through the years with the introduction of the first all-wheel drive model in 1988, the 911 Carrera 4, or 964. Horsepower was now up to 250, but that wasn’t the real story of this model. With more than 85 percent new components and a redesigned chassis, handling was vastly improved. This generation is in particular demand among Porsche 911 collectors.
