Crossovers Prove Worthy of Sports Status
When the editors of Motor Trend magazine finished with their comparison of the compact crossover Porsche Macan GTS versus the Jaguar F-Pace S, a couple of things became clear. First, the sporty Porsche was the clear winner in terms of handling, performance and the overall fun factor. Second, there is no longer a stigma in driving a vehicle with a higher center of gravity. Whether you call it a crossover or an SUV, the sporty Porsche Macan GTS has the goods to proudly call itself a Porsche. See how performance and utility come together in perfect harmony by taking a test drive at Porsche of Tucson.
Reason Why Macan is Porsche’s Biggest Seller
With a brand built on the shoulders of the sporty 911 two-seater, it seems like almost sacrilege that Porsche’s best selling vehicle is the Macan. The GTS is in the middle of the Macan price lineup, between the top-of-the-line 400 horsepower Turbo and the 340 horsepower S model. By producing 360 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, the Porsche Macan GTS provides plenty of power. The Motor Trend test launched the Macan to 60 mph from a dead stop in just 4.4 seconds. It roared through the quarter-mile run in just 13 seconds while hitting a top speed of 105. The editors lauded Porsche’s PDK gearbox, which “snaps off shifts so quickly that it sounds like a record skipping, but it’s remarkably civilized under lighter loads as well.”
Macan Wins in Comfort Category
The Motor Trend editors proved that performance doesn’t have to come at the sacrifice of creature comforts. The Porsche’s plush, high-bolstered seats are not only extremely comfortable, but they hold you in place as you try to straighten out the corners on the local track. The Macan had near perfect scores in the categories of “Driver Comfort,” “Ergonomics,” and “Rear Seat Comfort.” The compact crossover did register the highest marks possible for “Rear Seat Space,” “Interior Styling,” and “Fit and Finish.”
Porsche Safety Starts With Stopping
As with all Porsches, the ability to go very fast, very quickly, comes with enormous responsibility to be able to stop quickly when unexpected events occur. The Porsche Macan GTS brakes are super-sized with 6-piston front calipers accented in red. The rear brakes have over-sized 330 mm rotors that are adapted to the power under the hood. If you’d like even more stopping power, optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes are lighter and stronger than standard brakes, along with the added benefit of being proven on the race track. Visit Porsche of Tucson today for the ride of your life in the new Macan GTS.
Performance Package Beefs Up Power, Handling
When buying your new Porsche Macan sport crossover from Porsche of Tucson, make sure you inquire about the Performance Package that puts a little more zip in the popular vehicle’s giddyup. By tweaking everything from the engine and transmission to the suspension and exhaust, the Performance Package is the perfect solution for people who are waiting for a Turbo S version of the compact crossover. According to tests from Motor Trend magazine, the package not only adds 40 horses to the already beefy 400 horse output, it also reduces the sports vehicle’s 0-62 mph time from 4.8 to 4.4 seconds. See if anyone else in the school carpool can beat that number.
Bigger Brakes Help Stop in a Hurry
Porsche recognizes that the more powerful performance requires an ability to stop more quickly. The Performance Package includes heftier front brake rotors that measure 15.4 inches. The Porsche Active Suspension Management system is also part of the Performance Package, which results in a lowering of 0.6 inches. This not only brings the center of gravity down to provide superior handling, but also increases fuel efficiency out on the open highway. The Performance Package also adds a Sport Plus driving mode which tunes the accelerator and suspension to provide more responsive handling on the track or when you find a long lonesome road with lots of curves.
7-Speed PDK Transmission Adds to Driving Pleasure
By changing gears in just a fraction of a second, the Porsche 7-speed PDK transmission has the ability to move seamlessly up the ladder with no loss of power. Once a gear is engaged, the next gear is already in the queue, just waiting for the right RPMs to kick in and deliver the best performance. When you drive in automatic mode, the Macan not only delivers an enthusiastic drive, but also provides the greatest fuel efficiency. If you’d rather take on the role of changing gears manually, you just tap the paddles mounted on the steering wheel.
PTM Delivers Phenomenal Control
Porsche Traction Management is standard on all Macans, delivering an all-wheel drive system that utilizes sensors to continually check the grip of all four wheels. By using an electronically controlled multiplate clutch, PTM controls the distribution of power between both axles. If you’re powering through a corner, PTM recognizes the lack of lateral stability and delivers the power to the front wheels. Instead of taking the feel of the wheel away from the driver, the PTM system makes the most of your driving experience. Feel what it means to drive a Porsche Macan with and without the Performance Package by taking a trip to Porsche of Tucson.
Hits 60 MPH in Just 5.0 Seconds
The 2016 Porsche Macan GTS is a compact Sport Utility Vehicle that puts emphasis on the word “Sport.” Powered by a 3.0L twin-turbo V6, the Macan GTS delivers 360 horsepower and a spine tingling 369 pound feet of torque. That’s enough oomph to hit 60 mph from a standing stop in just 5.0 seconds on the way to a top speed of 159 mph. Porsche Traction Management helps you keep all that power on the road by automatically distributing the power between the front and rear axle as needed. Sensors are continually monitoring the wheel rotation speeds, g force demands and the steering angle to help keep the rubber on the asphalt. If you’re looking for a fun commuting vehicle or something with a little sass to haul the kids around town, stop by Porsche of Tucson and check out the new Macan GTS.
Efficiency Measures Help Skip Trips to the Pump
Porsche has integrated a number of fuel efficiency measures to help provide the best possible mileage in the sporty Macan GTS. Auto Start/Stop automatically switches the engine off when you come to a red light, then starts up again as soon as you release the brake. A coasting feature helps save more fuel by decoupling the transmission from the engine during flat or downhill runs. The vehicle coasts freely without the benefit of engine braking, helping maximize fuel efficiency. Innovative technology with regards to aerodynamics, thermal management and electrical system recuperation are other areas where Porsche maximizes fuel efficiency.
Air Suspension System Delivers Cloud-like Ride
Choose the air suspension system equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management and you not only get a ride that smooths out all the bumps in the road, you have the ability to lower the ride height to get the most dynamic performance possible. You can switch between three different levels depending on road conditions and your driving desires. PASM helps you stay in control by utilizing electronic damping to read the road conditions and adjust the suspension appropriately. Damping helps reduce body roll and skid when going through corners aggressively.
Communication Management System Controls Connectivity
The 7-inch Porsche Communication Management touchscreen controls all your navigation, communication and audio systems. An integrated sensor even responds to gestures, allowing you to keep your eyes focused on the road. Steering wheel controls also let you make phone calls, flip through radios stations and control your phone without losing control. The Porsche Macan GTS is one of the most popular Porsche models in America. See why with a test drive at Porsche of Tucson.
Small SUV Provides Premium Driving Experience
The all-new Porsche Macan GTS starts with the popular Macan S, and then adds some specific interior and exterior finishes along with an upgraded engine to deliver a thrilling driving experience. Porsche engineers started with the basic 3.0-liter twin turbocharged V6 from the Macan S, added a few hardware upgrades and fine-tuned the calibration to up the performance to 360 horsepower. Porsche’s Traction Management system works in concert with the dual-clutch transmission to deliver power to the appropriate axle as needed. The result is a 0 to 60 miles per hour run in just 4.8 seconds on the way to a top speed of 159 mph. Feel the power behind the wheel for yourself by taking a test drive at Porsche of Tucson when it arrives next March.
Air Suspension Standard on Macan GTS
For a smooth ride and tight handling, Porsche has incorporated an air ride suspension system on the GTS. The ability to adjust your ride height and control the stiffness of your dampers provides for superb control in virtually any driving condition. Take a close look and you’ll notice that the Porsche Macan GTS is already lower than the Macan Turbo, providing a dropped center of gravity for increased handling. Performance braking all around provides you the ability to stop in a reasonable distance, an important attribute of a car that goes this fast.
Sport Leather Seats Provide Comfort and Stability
As you might expect, Porsche didn’t skimp on the interior appointments. Leather sport seats feature fine Alcantra where the body sits, while firm bolsters keep you in place when careening around hairpin curves. The Porsche Communication Management System provides symphonic quality sound, which you may or may not want to turn up to drown out the throaty roar of the exhaust when pushing the GTS to its limits. Available navigation features a hard drive and provides 3D display with satellite imagery and real-time traffic conditions.
Macan S, Turbo Available Now
Although you do have to wait until next March for the Porsche Macan GTS to arrive at Porsche of Tucson, the very popular Macan S and Turbo are available for sale now. Starting at just $54,400, the S model is a bundle of fun, delivering 340 horsepower while taking just 5.2 seconds to go from 0 to 60. The most expensive Macan is the Turbo, with saves you six-tenths of a second in your run to 60 mph. Whether that and its other features are worth an additional $22,000 are something only you can determine.
Six-month Wait Time a Thing of the Past
The introduction of the small SUV known as the Porsche Macan was so popular in the United States, the company was struggling earlier this year to deliver vehicles within six months. Thanks to an increased allocation from the main plant in Germany, wait times have gone down to less than two months and are continuing to get smaller. The long wait was annoying for both customers and dealers like Porsche of Tucson. The company even started to offer extremely short-term lease packages on other vehicles to keep customers driving a Porsche while waiting for delivery of their Macan.
Despite Wait, Macan Sales Continue Strong
Sales of the Macan continued strong through the summer, with yearly increases of 40 percent for June, more than 60 percent in July and another 38 percent in August. The popular small SUV had a sales increase of 65 percent in September. Through the first nine months of 2015 sales for the Porsche Macan were more than double that period in 2014. Sales are currently just over 10,000 vehicles for the year and Porsche believes that with a proper inventory it could sell 18,000 Macans in the U.S. next year.
Macan Comes in Two Trim Levels
Buyers have their choice of two trim levels for the Macan, the standard S package and the premium Turbo. The S comes with a V6 naturally aspirated engine that delivers 340 horsepower and 339 foot-pounds of torque. The Turbo engine is a little larger and pumps out 400 horsepower and 406 foot-pounds of torque. Although both are perfectly adequate for freeway merges, passing big trucks and just having a blast on a mountain road, the Turbo does top out at 164 mph compared to 156 for the S model. The Turbo is also six-tenths of a second faster in the race to 60 mph from a standing start, hitting that mark in just 4.6 seconds. Naturally, the Turbo comes at a higher price, starting at $73,900 compared to just $52,600 for the S model.
Two Models Similar in Safety Features, Differ Otherwise
Both models have virtually identical safety features, but differ in the lighting system and interior creature comforts. While the Turbo has 18-way adaptive all-leather sport seats, the S model has 8-way power seats with memory trimmed in partial leather. Both have full power tailgates, electric mirrors, and four 12-volt power outlets. The Turbo has a Porsche Communication Management system that includes 3-D navigation and Wide Video Graphics Array color display. Explore the difference between the two models yourself with a visit to Porsche of Tucson.
